Watershed board member Ruth Snyderman approached me to participate in the cup-of-the-month club. As an obsessive caster of rings, I was an unlikely candidate for a series that produces drinking vessels. But, I've agreed to stranger things.

I dug through all my molds trying to find something that would make a suitable cup. I finally came across some dusty cup molds that had been given to me by an artist who was moving from downtown Manhattan to Brooklyn. She was closing her studio and giving her molds away. The molds were covered with dust from the Twin Towers.

With their usefulness temporarily camouflaged by the gritty coating, it took me a second to realize that cup molds would indeed be suitable for casting cups.

So, for the first time, I cast cups in my studio in Glen Ridge, NJ. They were then salt-fired at Watershed in Maine.

Tracing the creation of these new cups from New York City to Glen Ridge to Maine, I came to understand that these cups were shaped by events unrelated to Watershed, yet they exist solely because of Watershed.

Watershed's mission is to bring people together, inspire, and provide the technical means to complete the work. It's true.
